Acrylic and glued-on plastic tips had their moment — but for most clients they belong to the past. Today a full extension can be sculpted entirely in gel, built on a dual form, with nothing plastic left sitting under the nail. In my Downtown Calgary studio this is how I build every set: thin, strong, and shaped to the finger.
What “on dual forms” means
A dual form — also called an upper form — is a clear, reusable mould that fits over the fingertip. The gel is placed inside the form and cured directly onto your own nail, so the extension is shaped from the underside up. When the form comes off, the nail is already built, smooth, and close to its final shape before any filing begins.
That means the length and structure are gel from end to end. There is no plastic tip glued to the free edge and no hard seam buried under the surface.
Why not acrylic or plastic tips?
The older way to add length was to glue a plastic tip onto the natural nail and then build over it — often in acrylic. It works, but the tip stays underneath for the life of the set, and the result can feel thick and heavy.
With gel on a dual form, the enhancement is the gel itself, shaped to your finger. Nothing plastic is trapped beneath it, the walls can be kept thin, and the finish looks and feels closer to a natural nail.
Thin, strong, and properly built
Strength does not come from piling on product — it comes from architecture. A correct apex (the high point of the nail), balanced structure and even, thin walls are what let a slim nail hold up to everyday wear. Built well, a thin gel nail is more comfortable and less likely to catch or feel bulky.
Strength is built into the shape of the nail, not added with thickness.
This is where the dual-form method really shows: because the nail is sculpted inside the form, the structure is set from the start, and only fine refinement is needed afterwards.

How long it lasts
A set is generally designed to be worn for about three weeks before a refill, though this varies with nail growth, lifestyle and aftercare. At each refill the regrowth is filled in and the architecture is rebalanced, so the nails stay thin and well-shaped over time rather than getting heavier.
